Nicholas Gourtsoyiannis

M.D., PhD, Dr. (hc), FRCR (Hon.), FRCSI (Hon.)

Professor Gourtsoyiannis is Professor Emeritus of the University of Crete.

He was the inaugural Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiology of the University of Crete, and Head of the Department of Radiology of the University Hospital of Heraklion (1986-2010). He was also the first Medical Director of the University Hospital of Heraklion (1997-1999) and Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Crete (1999-2003).

He is the first President of the European Society of Radiology (ESR, 2005-2007), a Past President of the International Society of Radiology (ISR, 2010-2012), a former President of the European Association of Radiology (EAR, 2004-2005) and past President of the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in 2003.

Prof. Gourtsoyiannis is the founding father of the Hellenic College of Academic Radiology, President from 1997 until 2001 and its Honorary President thereafter. He is also one of the founding fathers of the Balkan Society of Radiology and its Honorary President. Prof. Gourtsoyiannis is a founding member of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR). He was President of two of its annual ESGAR meetings (1990, 1996), President of the Society (1997–2000), and President of the joint European (ESGAR) and American (SGR) Abdominal Congress in 2006.

He has introduced the Electronic Poster On-line System worldwide, known as EPOS, in 2003, and he is the founder of the European School of Radiology (ESOR), in 2006, of which he was the inaugural Educational/Scientific Director, from 2006 till 2018.

He is a leading GI Radiologist with major contributions to imaging of the diseases of the small intestine. He has more than 250 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals, and he has delivered more than 500 lectures worldwide, among which several eponymous, such as:

The Satya Pal Aggarwal Memorial Oration (India), the O. Olson lecture (Sweden), the Schinz lecture (Switzerland), the Haughton lecture (Ireland), the Gösta Forssell lecture (Sweden), the Robin Watson lecture (USA), the ESGAR Anniversary lecture (Spain), the Jacques Lefebre (Greece), the 3rd Annual lecture on Global Issues in Radiology (USA) and the Beclere lecture of the International Society of Radiology.

He has also been Visiting Professor in 30 Universities and Radiology Departments around the globe.

He has served on the Editorial Board of numerous Journals, including European Radiology, Abdominal Imaging, Investigative Radiology, Acta Radiologica and Magnetic Resonance in Medical Science. He has been the inaugural Editor of Hellenic Journal of Radiology (HJR) and has edited 4 international books, entitled:

He has received numerous honors. He has been awarded Honorary Membership by 29 National or Subspecialty Societies worldwide, as follows:

He is a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Bucharest. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists (UK), an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Ireland) and a Distinguished International Member of the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists (USA).

He has received the Gold Medal of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), of the European Society of Abdominal and Gastrointestinal Radiology (ESGAR), of the Brazilian College of Radiology (CBR), of the Serbian Society of Radiology (SSR), of the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology (AOSR), the Schinz Medal of Switzerland, the Boris Rajewsky Medal of the EAR, the Olson Medal of Sweden, the Medal of Honor of the Department of Health of Kazakhstan and the Beclere Medal of the International Society of Radiology (ISR).

In recognition of his unique contribution and leadership, the European Society of Abdominal and Gastrointestinal Radiology (ESGAR) named the NICK GOURTSOYIANNIS FOUNDATION COURSE, to be included into the format of its Annual Congress, the European Radiology Private Foundation of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) has established the annual NICHOLAS GOURTSOYIANNIS TEACHING FELLOWSHIP, and the Hellenic College of Academic Radiology has initiated the annual NICHOLAS GOURTSOYIANNIS SCHOLARSHIP.
