Consultant Interventional Radiologist

Dr Nikolaos Galanakis is currently a consultant Interventional Radiologist at the Department of Medical Imaging in University Hospital of Heraklion. He graduated in 2013 from the Medical School of the University of Crete and he is also a postgraduate student on Healthcare Management in Hellenic Open University. He has completed a PhD in the University of Crete on the role of CT and MR perfusion techniques in patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease. Moreover, he was a clinical fellow at the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology in San Paolo University Hospital of Milan. His clinical practice includes the majority of interventional radiology procedures including peripheral endovascular procedures, venous interventions, endovascular aneurysm repair,  transcatheter embolization and chemoembolization, inferior vena cava filter placement, central venous catheter and drainage catheter placement, dialysis related interventions, radiofrequency and microwave ablation, biliary and genitourinary interventions.  He is also involved in cardiovascular imaging including computed tomography angiography and coronary computed tomography angiography. Dr Nikolaos Galanakis has authored or co-authored more than 25 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 2 book chapters. In addition, he has presented numerous oral and poster scientific presentations and has been an invited lecturer in national and international conferences. His main research is focused on peripheral arterial disease, endovascular aneurysm repair and newer CT and MR perfusion techniques. He is a board member of Medical Association of Heraklion and Radiological Society of Crete and member of European Society of Radiology (ESR), Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) and Hellenic Radiological Society. Dr. Stylianos Megremis is a Consultant Radiologist, having a permanent position in Greek NHS for 3 consecutive decades. In 1990, he received his PhD in Thyroid Sonography from the University of Athens, and his MSc in Management of NHS Services from the Greek Open University (2012). He has 18 Publications in peer-rewiewed medical journals and conference proceedings (with 351 Citations in Google Scholar), 10 Publications in local journals, and numerous Presentations in International and National Conferences. In 1995, he joined for a semester the Ultrasound Unit of Southampton General University Hospital (England) as an Honorary Clinical Assistant for specialization in color Doppler procedures (vascular, superficial structures and abdominal applications). Clinical expertise includes both Diagnostic and Interventional Sonography. His keen interest is in Peripheral Vessels and Dialysis Vascular Access Investigations, Prostate Biopsies and Thyroid FNAs.

Dr Spanakis holds a BSc in Medical Radiography from Technological Educational Institute of Athens and an MD from the University of Crete School of Medicine. He completed his radiology residency as a chief resident at the University Hospital of Heraklion (2012-2013, where he currently holds a consultant radiologist position. He has a special interest on the Musculoskeletal System and in non-vascular interventional procedures, being responsible for the biggest non-vascular interventional service in the Eastern Mediterranean. Dr Spanakis has also contributed to the development of the only post-mortem CT service in Greece, in collaboration with the forensic medicine unit of the University of Crete.
